Daily Attendance |
| Attendance is a major key to success at Metro-Meridian Alternative High
School. Therefore, we request that ALL appointments, except those
considered an emergency, be scheduled outside of school hours. |
|
Reporting Absences |
| A parent or guardian must report each day of a student's absence by calling
the school office at 973-0550. Information may be reported in the evening
or on weekends by leaving a message on the school's voice mail. Students
18 years of age and older and living on their own, may report their own
absences. Notification should be made prior to the absence; if that is not
possible, it must be made no later than 72 hours after the date of the
absence. Notification does not automatically excuse the
absence, however, failure to notify the office within 72 hours may
result in the absence being recorded as unexcused, regardless of the
reason. |
|
Excused Absences |
Excused absences include those resulting from:
|
- Medical or dental treatment, examination, or recuperation;
- Death or serious illness in the immediate family;
- Observance of a religious holiday consistent with a student's
belief;
- Approval of school authorities secured prior to the absence;
- Circumstances or conditions which, in the opinion of the building
principal or designee, would not make it reasonable to expect the pupil
to benefit from an educational experience.
Absences due to family vacations or out-of-town trips must be arranged
by a parent/guardian with the principal one week prior to the dates of the
expected absence.
|
|
Unexcused Absences/Tardiness |
Some common examples of unexcused absences include:
|
- Tardiness: A student who enters class after the bell rings is
considered tardy. Students arriving five or more minutes late may
enter and complete work for course credit, but for attendance purposes,
they will be marked with an unexcused absence. Chronically tardy
students are referred to the office.
- Oversleeping
- Car trouble or other transportation problems
- Work conflicts

Leaving Campus During School |
Students who need to leave campus during school hours are required to:
Verify that permission has been received by the office prior to leaving;
and
Sign out in the office when they leave and sign back in upon their return.
Students who leave campus without notification to the office by a
parent/guardian will not be allowed to return to school that day. |
|
Monitoring Attendance |
| A record of each student's attendance is included in productivity reports
and progress reports mailed to the student's home throughout the year.
Productivity reports are mailed the fifth week of each nine-week period;
progress reports are mailed at the end of each nine-week period.
Parents/guardians wishing to follow their student's
attendance more closely are encouraged to call the school office on a
daily, weekly and/or monthly basis for specific updates.

Truancy Referrals to the District Attorney |
| As required by law, names of students not attending school will be
referred to the District Attorney. This includes students who meet
the 3, 5, 7 Rule (inexcusably absent for three consecutive days, five days
in a semester, or seven days in a school year), or who have more than 80
class absences. A letter will be sent to the
student's parent/guardian prior to the referral. |
|
Extended Day |
Students are encouraged to attend our extended day program that is
offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week from 7:05 am - 7:50
am and
2:40 pm - 3:25 pm. This program allows students the opportunity to
receive extra help in their classes or to make up extra hours that are
needed to complete the course. |
